### Meaning

1. (euphemism, school) a class of pupils who behave badly or are hard to teach.
2. (literal) a lesson or course that is hard and asks a lot of you.

### In the lessons

Teachers' and schools' polite word for a noisy, difficult group; staff rooms, reports, job adverts; all regions. The literal sense («a challenging maths class») praises the lesson for being hard.

### Examples

- I've got a challenging class this year — thirty-two of them and lots of energy.
- The advert said: «experience with challenging classes an advantage».
- Year 9 is a challenging class on Friday afternoons.
- That was a challenging class — the fractions really made me think.
- Supply teacher: «They warned me it was a challenging class. They were right.»
- Head teacher: «Our new staff get extra support with challenging classes.»

### Note

Stands for «badly behaved class» when teachers talk about a group of pupils; «challenging» about a lesson means «hard but good». Read the context: about pupils it is a polite complaint.
