### Meaning

1. (euphemism, finance) a fall in prices of shares or houses, usually by about a tenth or more.
2. (literal) a change that puts a mistake right.
3. (old, euphemism) punishment.

### In the lessons

Money news uses «a correction» to make a crash sound like a normal, healthy fix; finance and economics, all regions. In school it is the plain sense: putting a mistake right.

### Examples

- The market saw a correction of about ten per cent.
- Experts say house prices are due for a correction.
- The teacher wrote her corrections in green pen.
- The newspaper printed a correction the next day.
- Do your corrections before you start the new page.
- Investor chat: «It's not a crash, it's just a correction!»

### Note

In finance it stands for «prices fell». It sounds calm on purpose. In maths a «correction» of 10% means the price fell by a tenth: £200 becomes £180. In school, «do your corrections» means fix the mistakes.
