### Meaning

1. (euphemism, medical) a lump in the body, which may be a tumour or cancer.
2. (literal) an amount something has grown: a growth of 5 centimetres.
3. a lump on a plant.

### In the lessons

Doctors and families say «a growth» to avoid the frightening word «cancer» or before tests show what it is; all regions. In science and maths «growth» is the plain sense.

### Examples

- The doctor found a growth on his lung.
- They removed a small growth from her skin.
- News: «The singer had surgery to remove a growth.»
- The plant shows a growth of 3 cm in a week.
- There's a strange growth on the tree trunk.
- Gossip: «They say it's a growth, but nobody's said the word.»

### Note

As a medical word it may stand for «tumour» or «cancer», but not every growth is cancer. In maths, growth = increase: a growth from 20 to 26 is a growth of 6.
