### Meaning

1. (euphemism) not having enough money.
2. (literal) slightly too short in length or height.
3. not quite enough of something.

### In the lessons

People say «I'm a little short» to admit they cannot pay, politely; all regions; chat, family, borrowing.

### Examples

- I'm a little short this month, can I pay you next week?
- Sorry, I'm a little short — could you lend me a fiver?
- The trousers are a little short now; you've grown.
- We're a little short of chairs — bring two more.
- Maths: «I have £8 and need £10, so I'm a little short — £2 short.»
- Shop: «You're a little short, love — it's £4.50, not £4.»

### Note

As a euphemism it stands for «broke, without money». In maths «short by 2» means 2 fewer than needed: need 10, have 8, short by 2. «Short of» = not enough of.
