## In Jewish tradition

In Psalms the word is a noun, meaning wretched people, perhaps worthless attackers; in Lamentations it means low and wretched.

**Interpretation.** Lamentations pictures Jerusalem as a humbled woman crying to God, and tradition reads it as the people's cry of grief over the destroyed city.
