## In Jewish tradition

Judah's open admission, "She is more righteous than I," is a key moment of confessing wrongdoing. David says he acknowledged his sin and was forgiven.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis praise Judah for admitting the truth publicly even though it shamed him, and see in it a reason why kingship came from his line. In Sefer Yetzirah, it means that the Creator is recognized as King. The psalm is read as teaching that honest confession brings forgiveness.

### Examples

- And Judah acknowledged them, and said: 'She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son.' And he knew her again no more. (Torah GEN.38.26, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/A/acknowledged/#x1)
