### Meaning

1. (legal, euphemism) a natural disaster such as a flood, storm or earthquake that no person caused and nobody can be blamed for.
2. (religion) something done by God.

### In the lessons

A legal and insurance term; used to say nobody has to pay for the damage; official letters, contracts, news; all regions. People also use it jokingly for any surprise.

### Examples

- The insurer refused to pay, calling the flood an act of god.
- The contract does not cover acts of God.
- The storm was an act of God — nobody could have stopped it.
- News: «The airline says the volcano ash was an act of God.»
- Chat: «Passing that test was an act of God.»
- Lightning hit the barn; the farmer called it an act of God.

### Note

Usually written «act of God» with a capital G. In contracts it is a way to avoid paying — the plain meaning is «natural disaster, nobody to blame». Not about religion in a legal letter.
