### Note

«add» names the operation directly: put the amounts together (+). Past form «added» with -ed and double d. Adding whole numbers never makes the total smaller. Trap: «add up the difference» still needs the difference found first; read the whole question. Do not confuse «add» with «ad» (a short word for an advert): they sound the same.

## In Jewish tradition

The rule of the added fifth applies to redeeming a field, an animal or a tithe that had been set apart as holy. Rachel's wish at Joseph's birth is a prayer for another son.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis read the added fifth as a penalty for taking back what was given to God. The name "Joseph" is read as "may He add," pointing to Benjamin's birth.
