### Meaning

(euphemism, school, formal) a child's need for extra help or support because of a disability, learning difficulty, illness or other problem.

### In the lessons

The polite, official term in schools and care; UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand (US says «special needs» or «special education needs»). Used in reports, letters and policies to sound respectful.

### Examples

- Our school welcomes children with additional needs.
- She has additional needs and works with a teaching assistant.
- Letter: «Please tell us if your child has any additional needs.»
- The trip is planned so that pupils with additional needs can join in.
- Additional needs may be physical, emotional or about learning.
- Form: «Additional needs (if any): \_\_\_\_»

### Note

Stands for «disability or learning difficulty», but is wider: a child with a broken arm or who is learning English can have additional needs too. It is respectful; older terms like «backward» are offensive.
