### Meaning

(formal, medical, euphemism) something harmful that happens to a patient during treatment, such as a bad reaction to a medicine or a mistake that causes harm.

### In the lessons

Doctors, drug companies and safety reports use it as a neutral, formal term; all regions; in news it can make serious harm sound mild.

### Examples

- The trial recorded three adverse events.
- Report any adverse event to the doctor.
- The leaflet lists possible adverse events.
- News: «The hospital is investigating an adverse event during surgery.»
- Most adverse events were mild, like a headache.
- The study stopped after a serious adverse event.

### Note

Stands for «harm», «bad side effect» or sometimes «medical mistake». «Adverse» means «harmful, bad», not «advert». In maths problems «the rate of adverse events» is a fraction of patients.
