# alike

adjective (alike — not before a noun); adverb (alike)

«alike» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. Alike means very similar, looking or being almost the same («The twins look alike»). [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/alike/#m1)
2. As an adverb, alike means in the same way («treat everyone alike»). [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/alike/#m2)
3. Alike can mean both, or equally («adults and children alike»). [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/alike/#m3)

### In the lessons

In school pupils compare and contrast: how are two things alike and how are they different? (in science, maths shapes, stories). In everyday life twins, siblings and pets can look alike. Phrases: «look alike», «think alike», «great minds think alike», «young and old alike», «lookalike».

### Note

«Alike» comes after the verb, never before a noun: «The cakes are alike», not «the alike cakes» (say «similar cakes»). Do not use «alike» with «both … alike» doubled carelessly. In maths, similar shapes are alike in shape (same angles) but may differ in size.

## In Jewish tradition

Here it says both the clean and unclean person may eat the gazelle and hart, which are not sacrifices.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis taught that meat eaten as ordinary food, not as a sacrifice, did not need the purity required for holy offerings.

### Examples

- Thou shalt eat it within thy gates; the unclean and the clean may eat it alike, as the gazelle, and as the hart. (Torah DEU.15.22, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/A/alike/#x1)
