«aloof» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

2. Keeping apart from something on purpose, not getting involved, as in «stay aloof from the argument». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/aloof/#m2)

### Note

Usually after a verb (be, seem, remain aloof). Trap: aloof can be shyness, not pride; the word tells how someone looks to others. Opposite: friendly, outgoing, warm.

## In Jewish tradition

Here it means standing far away. Friends keep away from a suffering person, and a wise person keeps away from quarrels.

**Interpretation.** Tradition values staying out of strife and sees friends who leave a sufferer as a sad picture of loneliness in trouble.
