### Meaning

(euphemism, spin) false statements presented as if they were another kind of truth.

### In the lessons

Became famous in US politics; now used all over as a mocking name for lies or spin; news, jokes, critical thinking lessons.

### Examples

- When the numbers didn't match, she offered alternative facts.
- Teacher: «There are no alternative facts — check the source.»
- Joke: «My alternative facts say I did my homework.»
- Journalists laughed at the phrase «alternative facts».
- Critical thinking: a fact can be checked; «alternative facts» are usually untrue claims.
- Chat: «My brother's alternative facts: he says he didn't eat the last biscuit.»

### Note

Stands for «falsehoods», «lies». A fact is true; there is no other version of it — different opinions are not «alternative facts». Mostly used mockingly now.
