# analogous

adjective (analogous)

«analogous» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

Similar in some way, so that it can be compared: «analogous to» something. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/analogous/#m1)

### In the lessons

Used in science, maths and essays to make comparisons: a heart is analogous to a pump. In biology, analogous parts do the same job but evolved differently, like bird and insect wings.

### Examples

- The heart is analogous to a pump. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/analogous/#x1)

### Note

Said «a-NAL-a-gus». Noun: analogy. Formal; everyday: «similar», «like».

## In Jewish tradition

In Sefer Yetzirah it is used to line up the letters with other groups, such as the seven double letters with the six directions and the holy temple.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads the letters as matching the structure of the world, the year and the body, so that each set of things mirrors the others.

### Examples

- The seven double consonants are analogous to the six dimensions: height and depth, East and West, North and South, and the holy temple that stands in the centre, which carries them all. (Sefer Yetzirah, Kalisch 1877) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/A/analogous/#x1)
