# angle

noun (an angle, angles); verb (angle, angles, angled, angling)

«angle» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. An angle is the space or turn between two lines that meet at a point; it is measured in degrees. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/angle/#m1)
2. An angle is a corner, or the direction from which you look at something: «from this angle». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/angle/#m2)
3. An angle is a way of thinking about a problem or story: «Look at it from a different angle.» [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/angle/#m3)
4. To angle something is to point it slightly sideways; to angle is also to fish with a rod and line. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/angle/#m4)

### In the lessons

In maths, angles are measured with a protractor: a right angle is 90°, an acute angle is less than 90°, an obtuse angle is between 90° and 180°, a straight angle is 180°, and a full turn is 360°. Angles in a triangle add up to 180°, and in a four-sided shape to 360°. In everyday life you angle a mirror or a lamp; in sport you angle a shot. Phrases: «right angle», «at an angle», «from every angle», «angle for» (try to get something without asking directly).

### Examples

- A square has four right angles. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/angle/#x1)

### Note

Countable. Do not mix with «angel» (a spirit with wings): angLE vs angEL. Maths traps: the size of an angle does not depend on how long its lines (arms) are; 90° is a quarter turn. Angles on a straight line add to 180°; angles around a point add to 360°.

## In Jewish tradition

Here it means a corner or a side of a doorframe, and also a fishhook on a line used for catching fish. In the primary lessons: In maths, angles are measured with a protractor: a right angle is 90°, an acute angle is less than 90°, an obtuse angle is between 90° and 180°, a straight angle is 180°, and a full turn is 360°.
