«antelope» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

A fast, graceful wild animal like a deer, with horns, that lives mainly in Africa and Asia, such as the gazelle, impala and gnu. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/antelope/#m1)

## In Jewish tradition

It is on the list of clean animals that Israelites may eat, a deer-like animal with split hooves that chews its cud.

**Interpretation.** The laws of kashrut say a land animal is kosher only if it has split hooves and chews its cud, and the Torah lists examples.

### Examples

- the hart, and the gazelle, and the roebuck, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the antelope, and the mountain-sheep. (Torah DEU.14.5, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/A/antelope/#x1)
