## In Jewish tradition

"The apple of His eye" means the pupil of the eye, the most precious and carefully guarded part. In Proverbs the same saying is used for the teaching a person should guard, and "apples of gold" means beautiful, fitting words. In the Song of Songs apples are a sweet, refreshing fruit of love.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads it as showing how tenderly God guarded Israel in the wilderness. The rabbis read the Song of Songs as a love song between God and Israel, so the apples stand for the sweetness of that bond.
