### Meaning

(euphemism, school) not yet reaching the level expected for the pupil's age.

### In the lessons

Used in school reports and assessments, especially UK and Australia, to say a pupil is behind without saying «failing».

### Examples

- Maths: approaching standard.
- Report: «Writing is approaching standard; keep reading at home.»
- Most of the class met the standard; a few were approaching standard.
- Teacher: «He's approaching standard in reading and catching up fast.»
- The chart shows pupils working towards, approaching or at the expected standard.
- Official letter: «Your child's reading is assessed as approaching standard for their age.»

### Note

Stands for «below the expected level». It is kind, but parents should know it means «behind». Compare «below expectations», «working towards».
