## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it often means the whole community of Israel gathered together, or a holy gathering on a festival, like the "solemn assembly" on the eighth day. The prophets also use it for a gathering called for a fast, for worship of Baal, or for a crowd of wrongdoers.

**Interpretation.** The Hebrew idea is a holy gathering (a "convocation") called for the festivals. The "assembly of the LORD" means the community of Israel, and the law about who may enter it is read as marking who may join the congregation. Joel's call to sanctify an assembly is read as a call to turn back to God together.
