## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it is the tool used to pierce the ear of a servant who chooses to stay with his master instead of going free in the seventh year.

**Interpretation.** Tradition says the ear is pierced because it heard at Sinai that Israelites are God's servants, yet this man chose a human master. It teaches that freedom is a gift to value.

### Examples

- then thou shalt take an awl, and thrust it through his ear and into the door, and he shall be thy bondman for ever. (Torah DEU.15.17, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/A/awl/#x1)
- then his master shall bring him unto God, and shall bring him to the door, or unto the door-post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever. (Torah EXO.21.6, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/A/awl/#x2)
