### In the lessons

In everyday life it is used at airports: «baggage reclaim», «check in your baggage». In stories, «emotional baggage» tells the reader a character is carrying old hurts. In safety, never leave baggage unattended and never carry a bag for a stranger.

### Note

Uncountable: «some baggage», «a piece of baggage», never «a baggage» or «baggages». Similar to luggage (more common in the UK); Americans often say baggage. «Hand baggage» or «carry-on» goes into the plane cabin with you.

## In Jewish tradition

Here it means the goods, tools and supplies an army or traveling group carried with it, often kept in a camp guarded by a keeper. Saul hid among such baggage when he was chosen king.

**Interpretation.** Saul's hiding among the baggage is read as showing his modesty, or his fear of the heavy duty of kingship. Even so, God told the people where he was.
