## In Jewish tradition

Here "My ban" means a people set apart for God's destruction as a judgment. The Hebrew word is "cherem", something devoted to God that may not be used by people.

**Interpretation.** In the tradition, a cherem is something completely given over to God, sometimes as punishment for a nation's evil. Later Jewish communities used the same word for being shut out of the community.
