# berith

noun

«berith» in the English dictionary: in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## In Jewish tradition

Baal-berith ("lord of the covenant") and El-berith were names of a god worshiped at Shechem. Israel went astray after him.

**Interpretation.** The word berith usually names the covenant between God and Israel. Here the same word is used for a false god, which the tradition treats as a sad twisting of Israel's loyalty.
