### Meaning

(euphemism, polite) a family where one or both parents have children from an earlier relationship, so it has stepparents, stepchildren and half-brothers or half-sisters.

### In the lessons

Used to speak warmly about stepfamilies, instead of the older, colder word «stepfamily» or the hurtful «broken home»; to be kind and positive; everyday and official (school forms, social workers, magazines); all English-speaking countries, very common in the USA.

### Examples

- We're a blended family: my mum, my stepdad, his two boys and me.
- The school welcomes children from blended families and single-parent homes.
- Living in a blended family can take time to get used to.
- Their blended family has five kids under one roof.
- Christmas in a blended family means two dinners, honestly.
- The counsellor runs a group for children in blended families.
- Mia has a half-sister and two stepbrothers — it's a big blended family.

### Note

Not about mixing food in a blender. It stands for «stepfamily». It sounds friendly and modern; nobody is offended by it. In maths problems count each person once: stepchildren and half-siblings are all children of the household.
