## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah blood is the life of a creature. It is dashed on the altar, and people may not eat it. The prophets and psalms also use it for killing: shedding innocent blood is a grave crime, and in the plagues the Nile waters were turned to blood.

**Interpretation.** Tradition teaches that the blood is the life and belongs to God, so it is poured out and not eaten, and meat is salted to draw it out. Spilling human blood is a grave crime, and the prophets cry out against cities built with blood.
