### Meaning

(euphemism, polite) the unpleasant smell of a person's sweat.

### In the lessons

A polite, almost medical way to talk about a person smelling bad; used in health lessons, adverts for deodorant, and gently between people; the short form «BO» is everyday and can be teasing. All regions; spelling odour (UK, Australia, Canada) / odor (US).

### Examples

- Teenagers start to sweat more, which can cause body odour.
- Washing every day helps stop body odour.
- The advert says the spray stops body odour for 48 hours.
- Chat: «Someone in PE had serious BO, lol.»
- The health leaflet explained body odour simply.
- Gossip: «Don't sit by him, BO.»
- Wearing clean socks reduces foot and body odour.

### Note

It stands for «sweat smell» or «stink». Saying «you have BO» to someone is still rude, even though the phrase is polite. Spelling: odour (UK) / odor (US).
