## In Jewish tradition

Here a border is the edge of a land, or the edge of a mountain, or a land's boundary. In Joshua it also means the territory of a tribe, listed by its towns.

**Interpretation.** The Torah marks the exact borders of the land promised to Israel. Tradition treats these borders as a gift from God, and fixed so that each tribe knows its share. Joshua lists each tribe's border by name, which the tradition reads as the fulfilling of God's promise.
