### Meaning

(euphemism, formal, old-fashioned) born to parents who were not married to each other.

### In the lessons

A formal, old phrase from law, church and history books; it replaced harsher old words. Today it can sound judging, because having unmarried parents is ordinary; people now simply say «his parents weren't married». All regions; official and historical.

### Examples

- The king's son was born out of wedlock, so he could not inherit the crown.
- In the old story, the girl was born out of wedlock and hidden away.
- In the past, children born out of wedlock were treated unfairly.
- The law now gives the same rights to children born in or out of wedlock.
- History lesson: many famous people were born out of wedlock.
- The novel's hero was born out of wedlock and raised by his aunt.

### Note

«Wedlock» means marriage. The phrase is not used about babies today in normal talk; it sounds old and stiff. Never use the old rude words for such a child.
