## In Jewish tradition

The breastplate was a square piece of cloth worn on the chest of the high priest, set with twelve precious stones, one for each tribe of Israel.

**Interpretation.** Tradition calls it the choshen, and says it carried the Urim and Thummim, used to ask God questions. Wearing it, the high priest carried all the tribes over his heart.
