## In Jewish tradition

In the laws about skin disease, a bright spot is a pale, shiny patch on the skin that the priest must examine. In the later books it also means shining, polished or full of light, as in bright metal, bright skies, and a bright face.

**Interpretation.** The priest, not the doctor, judged whether a spot made someone unclean, and tradition sees these laws as about spiritual purity and speech, not just illness. Psalms says wine and oil make the face bright, a picture of joy and well-being.
