### Meaning

1. (euphemism, old-fashioned) a family where the parents have divorced or separated.
2. (literal) a house that is damaged.

### In the lessons

An older phrase from newspapers and social work; it hides the plain words divorce and separation, but now sounds unkind because it suggests the child is damaged. Today people say «separated parents», «single-parent family» or «blended family». All regions.

### Examples

- The report blamed his troubles on growing up in a broken home.
- People once said children from broken homes would do badly, but that is not true.
- She hates the phrase «broken home»; her family is happy.
- The old newspaper said he came from a broken home.
- After the storm, the street was full of broken homes (literal).
- Many children of divorced parents do brilliantly at school.

### Note

Trap: it judges a family; avoid it in kind talk. It stands for «divorced or separated parents», not broken furniture.
