## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah Aaron's rod budded to show that God had chosen the tribe of Levi for the priesthood. Job uses the bud as a picture of hope, since even a cut tree may bud again at the scent of water, and Ezekiel says that "arrogancy hath budded".

**Interpretation.** Tradition sees the budding almond rod as a miracle that ended the people's complaints, and a sign that priesthood is given by God. The rabbis read Job's budding tree as a hope for renewal, and Ezekiel's budding pride as a sign that wrong grows until it is ripe for judgment.
