## In Jewish tradition

The baby Moses was laid in a basket made of bulrushes (papyrus reeds) by the River Nile.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis saw in the little reed basket a sign of God's care. The child who would free Israel was saved by the river that Pharaoh had used for his cruel decree.
