## In Jewish tradition

Here it means siege-works raised against an enemy city.

**Interpretation.** Tradition takes this law as a rule against wasting. Fruit trees must not be cut down even in war, and the rabbis took this as the basis of the prohibition on needless destruction (bal tashchit).

### Examples

- Only the trees of which thou knowest that they are not trees for food, them thou mayest destroy and cut down, that thou mayest build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.
