# buy

verb (buy, buys, bought, buying); noun (a good buy)

«buy» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. To buy is to get something by paying money for it. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/B/buy/#m1)
2. A buy is something bought: this coat was a good buy (it was worth the money). [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/B/buy/#m2)

### In the lessons

getting more things, on different days or in packs; or spending money; in maths shop problems: the buyer gets more things (add) but has less money (subtract the price); «buy N packs of M» = N × M; in everyday life shopping, «buy one, get one free»

### Examples

### Note

Past form «bought» (not «buyed»). Buying gives the buyer more things: with two buys and «in total» add, with «packs … a pack holds» multiply. Trap: the money goes down when you buy: subtract the price. Do not mix «buy» with «by» and «bye»: all three sound the same.

## In Jewish tradition

Jacob's sons went down to Egypt to buy grain in the famine. This begins the journey that brought them to Joseph and then to the whole family's coming to Egypt. Proverbs uses buying as a picture: "Buy the truth, and sell it not", and in Ruth a kinsman buys land by drawing off his shoe.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis read "Buy the truth" as meaning that wisdom is worth any cost and must never be given up. The shoe in Ruth was the old way of making a purchase official.
