### Meaning

1. (euphemism, religious, polite) died; God took the person to heaven.
2. (literal) phoned home; or was told to come home.

### In the lessons

Used in church notices, funeral programmes and by religious families, mostly in the USA; a kind, hopeful way to speak of death. Polite, religious register.

### Examples

- Our beloved sister was called home on Sunday morning.
- The pastor said Grandpa had been called home to be with the Lord.
- She called home every night from camp (literal).
- The funeral notice said he was «called home» peacefully.
- The soldier was called home after his mother became ill (literal).
- We take comfort that she has been called home.

### Note

Trap: the literal sense (phoned home, told to come home) is very common; only religious or funeral context means «died». Plain word: died.
