# canaanite

noun

«canaanite» in the English dictionary: in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## In Jewish tradition

The Canaanites were one of the peoples living in the land that God promised to Abraham's children. In the Prophets the name is also used for the land itself, and for one of the peoples Joshua fought, who lived east and west of the land.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis read the mention of the Canaanites as showing that the land was not yet Israel's. The Canaanites are the first on the lists of nations to be driven out. Ezekiel's words to Jerusalem, "thine origin is of the land of the Canaanite", are read as a harsh rebuke: the city had acted like the nations it replaced.
