# causeway

noun (a causeway, causeways)

«causeway» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. A raised road or path across wet ground, marshes or shallow water. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#m1)
2. The Giant's Causeway: a famous place in Northern Ireland with about 40,000 six-sided rock columns. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#m2)

### In the lessons

In geography lessons, some islands are joined to the mainland by a causeway that floods at high tide, like Holy Island (Lindisfarne) in England. In safety lessons, check the tide times before crossing a tidal causeway. In science, the Giant's Causeway was made by cooling lava.

### Examples

- We walked across the causeway to the island. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#x1)
- Check the tide times before driving over the causeway. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#x2)
- The causeway disappears under the sea at high tide. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#x3)
- The Giant's Causeway has hexagonal columns. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#x4)
- Legend says the giant Finn McCool built the causeway. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#x5)
- A long causeway crosses the marsh. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#x6)
- As for water, I am sinking a pump, and, plase goodness, as soon as the Causeway's made, I intend to finish it." [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/causeway/#x7)

### Note

Countable: a causeway, causeways. Not about «cause» (a reason); the word comes from an old word for a raised path. Safety: cars get stuck on tidal causeways every year when drivers ignore the tide.

## In Jewish tradition

It means a raised road or ramp near the Temple gate, used by the Levite guards.

**Interpretation.** It belongs to the lists of Levite gatekeepers in Chronicles, showing that Temple service was carefully organised, with each guard having a post.

### Examples

- For the Precinct westward, four at the causeway, and two at the Precinct. (Writings 1CH.26.18, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/C/causeway/#x1)
- To Shuppim and Hosah westward, by the gate of Shallecheth, at the causeway that goeth up, ward against ward. (Writings 1CH.26.16, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/C/causeway/#x2)

### Note

Countable: a causeway, causeways. Not about «cause» (a reason); the word comes from an old word for a raised path. Safety: cars get stuck on tidal causeways every year when drivers ignore the tide.
