## In Jewish tradition

The firepan used by the priests to burn incense before the LORD. On the Day of Atonement the high priest carries it into the Holy of Holies.

**Interpretation.** Nadab and Abihu offered a censer with fire the LORD had not commanded, and were consumed. Tradition offers many explanations, such as that they acted without being told to or that they came unprepared.
