(euphemism, old-fashioned) a baby born when the mother is older, near the time her monthly periods stop (the menopause, «the change»).

### In the lessons

An old family phrase for a late, often surprise, baby; gentle and a bit humorous; heard from grandparents; all regions, more common in the past.

«The change» stands for the menopause, when a woman stops being able to have babies. The phrase sounds old-fashioned now.
