In science and maths it is the past of classify: "the animals were classified as mammals". In spy stories, classified files are top secret. Phrases: classified as, classified information, top secret and classified, classified ads.

### Note

Past form: classify becomes classified (y to i). "Classified as" means put in a group. In maths, 9 is classified as odd and square, not prime.
