### In the lessons

In geography lessons, coastlines change through erosion (waves wearing away cliffs) and deposition (sand building beaches); features include bays, headlands, cliffs, stacks and spits. Countries are compared by length of coastline. In maths there is a famous puzzle: the more carefully you measure a coastline, the longer it seems (the coastline paradox).

Countable, one word: coastline. Coast is the strip of land by the sea; coastline is mainly its shape or edge. Shoreline is similar and can be used for lakes too.
