### In the lessons

In science lessons, materials that conduct heat or electricity are conductors (metals like copper); materials that do not are insulators (plastic, wood, rubber). That is why wires are copper inside plastic. We conduct a fair test by changing only one thing. At school, "conduct" is how well you behave: a code of conduct is a set of rules. In music, the conductor conducts the orchestra. Phrases: "conduct an experiment", "conduct electricity", "conduct heat", "good conduct", "code of conduct".

### Note

Stress changes the meaning: conDUCT (verb), CONduct (noun). As a noun about behaviour it is uncountable: "good conduct", not "a good conduct". Water with salts in it conducts electricity, which is why electrical things and water are dangerous together.
