2. Confusion is a messy state where things are mixed up and nobody knows what is happening. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/C/confusion/#m2)

### In the lessons

In school it names the moment you do not understand yet, which is normal and a sign to ask a question. In stories it shows a character is lost or puzzled, or that a crowd is in disorder. In safety talk, confusion after a bump on the head can be a warning sign. Phrases: «in confusion», «cause confusion», «to avoid confusion», «there was some confusion about», «in all the confusion».

### Note

Usually uncountable: «a lot of confusion», not «many confusions». It comes from the verb «confuse» and the adjective «confused» (how you feel) or «confusing» (what makes you feel it). Sudden confusion after an injury or in an older person is a reason to tell an adult. In a maths problem it does not stand for a number; it only tells that something in the story was unclear.

## In Jewish tradition

In the Psalms and Proverbs, confusion means shame or disgrace, as when a face is covered. It can also mean foolishness, as of one who answers before he hears.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads the psalmist's confusion as the shame he bears for God's sake. Sefer Yetzirah warns that letters and parts must not be mixed up.
