### In the lessons

In stories and everyday life, friends offer consolation after a loss or disappointment. In sport and competitions, a «consolation prize» is given to someone who didn't win, and a «consolation goal» is scored by a team that is losing badly. In church life, prayer and hymns can bring consolation in grief. It tells the reader someone is being comforted.

## In Jewish tradition

Comfort given in grief. Job's friends offer it, and Isaiah promises it to Jerusalem.

**Interpretation.** Isaiah's consolations give their name to the "Sabbaths of Consolation" after Tisha B'Av, when comfort is read after the Temple's destruction.
