### In the lessons

In science, cork floats because it is less dense than water, and it is a good insulator of heat and sound; it is used for noticeboards (corkboards), floats on fishing lines, coasters and floor tiles. The cork oak grows mainly in Portugal and Spain, and its bark is stripped carefully every nine years without killing the tree, so cork is renewable. In history, Robert Hooke looked at thin cork under a microscope and named "cells". Phrases: "a cork board", "pop the cork", "cork oak", "float like a cork".
