### In the lessons

Countable noun. Homophone: counsel (advice, or to give advice). A member is a councillor (UK) or councilor (US). In British English, council can take a singular or plural verb: The council is or are deciding.

## In Jewish tradition

In Jacob's words it means a secret meeting or plan of a group. Elsewhere it means a gathering that gives advice, even God's own heavenly circle, and in Judges the people's meeting to decide.

**Interpretation.** Jacob refuses to join the secret plans of Simeon and Levi, which tradition reads as his rejection of their violence at Shechem. "The council of God" in Job is read as God's own secret wisdom, which humans cannot hear.
