### In the lessons

In stories, history and news it praises heroes, rescuers and ordinary people who stand up for others. In lessons on fights and fear, pupils learn that courage can mean saying no, telling the truth or helping someone being bullied, not only fighting. Spelling: keeps the e after g so it says "j": courAGEous. Pronounced kuh-RAY-jus. Noun: courage; adverb: courageously. Opposite: cowardly. Close words: brave, bold, fearless (but fearless means without fear; courageous means acting despite fear).

## In Jewish tradition

Brave, strong. The Bible often commands people to be strong and courageous.

**Interpretation.** Joshua is told to be courageous in keeping the Torah. Tradition says true courage means faithfulness to God's law.
