### Meaning

1. A crumpet is a round, flat, soft bread cake with small holes on top, toasted and eaten hot with butter.
2. (rude, adult slang) a rude word grown-ups use; not for school.

### In the lessons

In Britain, Ireland, Australia and NZ, crumpets with butter and jam or honey are a classic winter tea-time treat. In The Wind in the Willows the animals enjoy hot buttered toast and cosy teas by the fire, the kind of food crumpets belong to. In Canada and the US the English muffin is a similar thing.

### Examples

- We toasted crumpets by the fire.
- Butter melts into the little holes in a crumpet.
- Grandma serves crumpets and tea on Sundays.
- A packet of crumpets costs £1.20; how much do 3 packets cost?
- I like my crumpet with honey.
- Hot crumpets are perfect on a cold day.

### Note

Countable: crumpets. Not the same as a muffin or a pikelet, though similar.
