### Note

«Cut» does not change in the past: cut, cut — the t doubles in «cutting». In maths, cutting a shape into equal parts makes fractions: a cake cut into 4 equal parts gives quarters.

## In Jewish tradition

It can mean carving stones for the sanctuary, and also forbidden gashes in the flesh made as mourning for the dead. The prophets also use it for cutting off, meaning destroying, peoples, and for cuts on the hands as a sign of mourning.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis take the ban on cuttings as a rule against pagan mourning rites, and as respect for the body as made in God's image. Skilled cutting of stones was part of building the tabernacle. Jeremiah's cuttings show the mourning customs of the nations the prophet describes.
